Living on the Water

Introduction

What I am studying in this thesis is the problem of insufficient urban land caused by the global sea-level rise. For this problem, traditional solutions include reclamation from the sea and the construction of coastal dams. But in fact, these methods will bring many negative problems to the society. Therefore, I set floating community as a new alternative and combined with the advantages of modular building to make it a new type of residential area that can continue to grow in the future.

This community consists of two parts, one is the low-rise modules that can grow in the horizontal direction, and the other is the high-rise tower that can grow in the vertical direction.

Supervisor's comments:

Ten years ago, sustainability for the next generation was discussed much more than resilience. Due to the rapid climate change and slow responses from human society, the situation has been becoming urgent, so that resilience has become a popular topic nowadays. As a result, both mitigation and adaptation strategies are needed. Apart from all other romanticised floating city designs, which in my opinion are not feasible and does not work in the real life, this thesis provides a continuous long-term adaptation planning and design that could become the blueprint for government to deal with sea level rise.
